The first national training camp for 2018 usually takes place in Auckland, which is a 2-day event organised by the Coaches Council of Karate New Zealand.
Sensei Chris Bennett was one of the National Coaches at the camp, and he is a Certified WKF Coach in both Kata and Kumite. Assisting with the coaching were Shihan David Bennett, Sensei Beaty Bennett, and Sensei Chante Betham.
The athletes were given the opportunity to referee and judge in one of the kumite sessions by the National Referees who provided hands-on training and guidance. This made them appreciate the hard work of tournament officials, and how important it is perform their techniques as sharp as possible to be awarded a point.
Senpai Zak Scott focused on Kata and the participants filmed each other performing. They played back the videos to make assessments and provide feedback. Senpai Sian Scott was unable to take part due to her knee injury with her ACL operation pending. Sian was able to assist Andy Roosen, the Head of the Coaches Council, with the kumite sessions.
