Well done to our 5-member Jyoshinmon team who competed at the New Zealand Open organised by Canterbury Westland region in association with Karate New Zealand. The 2-day event was held at the Pioneer Sports Stadium, 75 Lyttleton Street, in Christchurch.
For Juan and his younger sister Skylar, this was their first NZ Open. Also for Noah and this was only his second tournament, and his first international tournament.
Shihan David Bennett, Sensei Beaty Bennett, and Sensei Chris Bennett coached our team. Sensei Jason Ng was also one of the attending Referees - as OKF Kata Judge A and OKF Kumite Referee A. Senpai Jojina Scott is training to be a Referee and helped out in her first international event.
Thank you to Senpai Zak Scott for assisting with coaching, helping the Table Staff and taking photos. Unfortunately Zak is still recovering from his illness so he could not compete. Thank you to Noah's mother Ngaio who helped to take videos of the event.
Senpai Sian Scott was one of the table staff and helped to marshall the juniors on Day 1, as the Senior events were on Day 2. Chad Evans joined Jyoshinmon at the Manurewa dojo and was on the New Zealand team with Sensei Chris in 2001. This event was Chad's first tournament since he got back into karate training.
Mixed results for our team but still great effort!
